Thanks all for back box help.
Problem with very lumpy running on low revs (Idle) sounds like its missing. When revd engine sounds perfect. Having Cambelt and tensioner done next week plus full service. 51000 genuin miles on the clock. Had new back box fitted 13-02-2003. Standard Box, but engine still lumpy could it be air leak somewhere, or has anybody had a similar problem.
If you have eratic idling ,for example the revs vary from say 500-1500rpm(like mine did)then you need to take apart the idle contol valve and clean it-use petrol or carb cleaner and hopefully that should do the trick. If you had an air leak you would have a high rpm idle but not lumpy.
Hold your breath dude, one of the biggest causes of lumpy idle on the 24v 164 is the cambelt being 1 or 2 teeth out of synch on the rear bank. Make sure you have tensioner replaced also when they do the service.
Have you checked your fault codes? Turn the ignition key to stage 1 then pump the gas pedal 5 times all the way to the floor (do 5 pumps quickly) then watch the injector symbol on the dash flash a series of times 4-4-4-4 means no error stored. (Ot does one long flash at the start and end of each cycle)
