a good test for the 'stat' is , let the engine run idle for about 10/15 minutes and watch when the fan starts to kick in, should be around 90/95 degrees. When this happens the 'stat' is ok. Remember the gauges in cars are not 'aircraft qualified', so 80 on your gauge can also mean 70 or 90. Mine is always running a liitle under halfway...
In severe cold and short runs I cover the front airintake with some plastic sheet and sticky tape. Looks horrible but is effective.
I sometimes wish the curtain gizmo of a Morris Minor 1948 was still available, you could manually pull a curtain in front of the radiator, best invention ever, beats every 'stat'. wink
