155 Electical Fault

I’ve had lots of Alfa’s over the years but I’ve never really suffered from typical Alfa problems (excluding rust!) …… until now.

My 155 16v electric’s have gone made. Intermittently over the last two months items such as the wipers, the heater fan, central locking, rear window warning light, front fog warning light etc etc have come on at odd times – even when the ignition is off! I immediately assumed a short somewhere and the garage reckoned it was the wiper motor. This was replaced – got rid of the juddering ! – but the electrical fault re-occurred.

Electrical specialists (!) then diagnosed water on the fuse box (well it’s a new windscreen so there could be a leak…) and said a new box was needed because the contacts were all “green”. I took the box apart and found no corrosion but the car benefited from 3 days in my garage getting a good dry-out!

The only fault now seems to be the central locking goes mad for 10 seconds when I turn the engine off – oh and the ABS light is on constantly. Mind you, on the way home last night in the wet, I discovered that the light should be on – the ABS has stopped working!

OK, so its an electrical problem – any ideas?

On www.alfa155.com we have come across a fuse box circuit board that has "split itself" in two!!

Not come across anything exactly the same. I can only suggest taking it to a different "electrical specialist" or try posting on the alfaowner sister site, 155.com for wider experience of the cars.

BTW, there is a small but hardy bunch of Scots on there too

- Door locking mechanism dead.
- Can't open passenger door, drivers door can't be locked.
- Wipers always on.
- Interior light goes on and off while driving.
- Engine keeps running with the ignition off, stops when I turn on the rear window heater or if I put it in reverse.
- Broken fuse. (lights)
- Odometer erratic. Sometimes it just start to move, with the ignition off.
- Clicking relays under the hood. I guess fuel-pump relays etc.

And the list goes on and on... I also never had electrical problems, until today. Some one already called it a pinball machine. frown

Water in the fusebox!!!!!

I have seen this on several occasions, thank God never on a 155 in my possessions. Internal circuit split, connectors corroded! Pull the fusebox out of the car. Rather simple, if you pay attention as to where all the multiconnectors go. Not to worry, they are coded, so they cannot be put back in, in the wrong place. Keeping track of them helps eases the process.

Then leave the fusebox in a dry spot in your house for a couple of days. Spray (lightly) with silicone and put it back in. Wrapping the backside (connector side) in plastic might prove to be a good idea.

The ABS thing can be related to numerous faults, both with sensors, blown fuses, etc.

Hope this helps, Anyway, it's worth a shot, and a nice little DIY job for the holidays.

The ABS light can come on if one or both of the rear brake lights have blown.
