I had this problem with my 2litre 16v last year. A new gasket cured it and since then she has run much better. I also changed the plugs, they were getting manky, as it seemed convenient to do so, if not expensive!
Don't forget to remove and wipe your plugs clean and also the leads. The plug caps screw off the lead and its worth doing a really thorough job. Oil gets in to the smallest spaces. An hour cleaning the all the bits will be time well spent.
Be VERY CAREFUL when re-tightening the cam cover. They are very fragile and will crack if you don't pull them down gently and evenly. I suggest starting with the bolt in the centre and spiraling outwards, tightening half and then quarter, as it gets tigher, turn at a time per bolt. It will take a while but won't knacker your cover and render you immobile and even poorer!
