Engine noise Alfa 145 1.4 TS => Opinion wanted

Hi All,

Recently i bought my first Alfa it's a beatiful black alfa 145 form '98
(55000 km), I bought it by a orginal Alfa dealer with a half year waranty

But i do hear something weird when i start it :

The engine sounds for upto 5 seconds like an old Diesel engine (sqeaks and
ratling a heard for a short period, to then dissapear.)

As i do have some technical knowledge i suspose this is caused because the
oil has dissapeared from the top of the engine and that the valves an
camshaft are for a short moment without oil (untill oil pump has delivered
pressure again), this would explain why this sound is only be heard when
the engine is started as it not has been running for a period longer then
approx 2 hours. (a cold start in the mornig the sound is even louder)

I asked the dealer if this is normal, and he told me not to worry as this
should be normal......

Could somebody please tell me if this behavior from a 1.4 TS is normal ? ,
because i still have a one month waranty left..... and this sound make my
hair rise in the morning.

Btw i already checked the oil evertthing OK....

They will normally want to change the cam belt as well.....it starts to get pricey

I would say it is the timing variator also. I would agree with getting the timing belt changed at the same time. THis should not be as expensive as the 2 litre engine as your car does not have a balancer shaft

Doesn't sound like the variator to me. I have had my variator replaced on my 2.0QV, but it wasn't noisy when cold and when it was noisy, ie at warm idle, it persisted and didn't cease after a few seconds.

I don't know my alfa engine as well as other engines I have owned, but it does sounds like a traditional hydraulic valve problem to me. Maybe there is just some wear or the wrong oil is being used...?
