You aint alone, my TS never used a drop and its now got 95k on the clock. Used fully synthetic for most of its life then changed to semi when the miles went up high. Always given a good seeing to every day, travelling 300 miles a week.
As with the majority of engine probs I think neglect and/or poor maintenance is at the heart of this. I would go as far as saying that the 2 litre Twinspark 8v engine is one of the most robust and reliable Alfa has ever made although as known by many the 2 litre twinspark including the new 156 models do have a more than healthy appetite for drinking a drop of multigrade.
As far as recommending an oil I'm switching from the very good Quantum semi synth to Valvoline semi, as any Alfa that can reach 212,000 miles on it i.e( AR75 post earlier in the week) without more than removal of the oil filler cap wins any oil argument for me! am using selenia 20k oil......seem to use a bit, only just done 1000 miles on it, but seem to be using 'some'....not sure, but on valvoline that i used before, it didnt seem to use as much. go figure.....but as long as i check it about once per week (actually checking it more, but thats just nerves)i guess it will be okay....its just one of those things, im prepared to suffer
