Spark Plugs

My 145 cloverleaf will shortly be reaching its 5th Birthday. It's got 45,000 miles on the clock and the variator gone so I'll get the belts changed on the next service.

Question is should I get the spark plugs replaced as well? I'm tempted to keep them in for another year to keep the service cost down (I only do about 5000 miles a year. The service schedule states that the plus should be replaced every 72,000 miles or 5 years. Do the plugs go off over time? The cars running just fine apart from the diesel sound at tick over due to the variator fault.

Hi Ed 145,

The DERV engine sound is usually the hallmark of the variator being worn. So i would imagine A.A is correct. However depending on the type some variators can be rebuilt I believe, but whether there is enough of a saving to make it worth while I don't know, might be worth discussing with your alfa specialist?

As regards the plugs A.A The service interval of 72k is generally considered wildly optimistic but much of the life span of the NGK platinum plugs is down to how much stick you have given the 145 over that period?

Oh and I know they are very expensive especially considering there are 8, but Ian at sells them at quite a discount and would be able to mail order you a set no probs!

Hope some of this helps.

Warm Regards
