Hi ... this is a long post .... so deep breath in .... and we're off...
I know there's lots of threads on this issue (believe me I've spent days trawling through them) but some of them seem really confusing to an Alfa virgin.
I only have one remote control key for my car and no codes or master key either. So I contacted Motorvogue (Alfa dealer in Northampton) this afternoon and they advised me there was absolutely no point in getting the codes as I wouldn't be able to have any new keys cut without the master key for programming them. Elsewhere in the AO forum though it's suggested this isn't the case - unless of course I've misunderstood.
The master key to my W reg 146 1.8 TS was lost in 2006 (two owners ago) and no codes were passed on to the then owner at the time it was bought. The 2006 owner said she never had to use it anyway. Is it quite a rare thing to have to use the master key or has this car just been lucky?
Both Alfaaid and Motorvogue say that should I need a new key I would have to have the entire locks, ecu unit and keys reprogrammed and changed - simply because I don't have this dark red/brown key. I can see their point but elsewhere in the forum I've red about cloning keys, transponder keys, swapping ignition barrels and ecus from other cars - what does it all mean??
If you've read this far... well done!
By the way, after a bit of pushing Motorvogue did eventually quote me £27.61 to contact Alfa for the key code but reiterated how pointless it would be because 'it's all synchronised inside and goes in a sequence...' which generally lost me
I asked him if I could have the key code and 'clone' a key (transferring the data) and keep my original key to open the doors (so I wouldn't have to fork out for changing the locks). This was met by a pause and then the same response: '...it's all synchronised inside and goes in a sequence...'
I don't mind only having one key ... my only issue is with it's design. I think at some point it may snap and then I'll be well and truly stuffed if all the above (AR dealer's advice) is indeed true.
Is there any clear guidance on this master key issue? I'm sure lots of owners would benefit
All comments, thoughts and experiences are most welcome x
End of long post.
