That's about where my 1.8 sits, always thought it was a bit low but pipework seems hot enough.

No, it should be between 80 and 90 when the engine is fully up to temperature regardless of driving or sitting in traffic. My needle is "glued" to 90 degrees once up to temp.

You need a new thermostat. Yours looks like it's stuck open. I bet you've got quite poor fuel consumption with it like that.

Hi all! I also think something is wrong here... she had thermostat replaced some years ago. by that time temps were really low, ~50 ºC. even after thermostat replaced temp gauge was never above 80 ºC. but it has been lowering with time...

i find it strange, cause my 156 1.8 sits on 90 ºC.

i also have really good fuel consumption. always below 8L/100 km, 7L/100 km most of the time...

any sensor not working right?

Ah GialloEvo - this is the CF1 (phase 1 ... or more like "phase 1b" since it has the T/S engine)

That has the famose "80C" temperature gauge that is actually 90C.

The later car (facelift/phase2) with the chrome bezels on the dials has 90C in the middle since I guess AR found it easier to reprint the dial than to re-engineer the sensors.

Any road up.. 80C is 90C so Alfizta's beast should read 76-78C indicated (86-88C actual).

This dial looks a bit low on that basis. My own 1.8 sits at 76C.. (indicated)... it increases to 78C on a long motorway run. When the 'stat is completely not working, the gauge reads just above that "60C" line.

I would be inclined to leave it since the summer is coming.. but buy a new one the first chance you get (or if you see a bargain) and leave it in the garage. Change it in November.

CF1 has the T or L shaped connector (I can't remember which is which.. it's the more expensive of the two types available.. ) so make sure you get the right one.

Alfaworkshop has pictures of both types so you can choose the correct one (and their prices are pretty much the cheapest you'll find anyway for an OE quality 'stat, so it may be worth buying it from them).

well, now I think the thermostat is really knackered. made a diy test yesterday and the coolant in hose before the reservoir gets warm with the engine as engine starts from cold. the thermostat seams to be working but somehow does not fully closes, I think... is strange cause I changed it about 60~70000 km ago...

A thermostat lasting 70000km isn't bad so I don't think it unreasonable to have to be changing it again after that distance. They don't last forever and in the worst cases, some owners seem to need to change them every 6-12 months having done a fraction of the distance you have. I guess they don't make them like they used to.

Who is the manufacturer of your current thermostat out of interest?

it was changed in an alfa dealer from where I'm living about 5 years ago... I think there were two brands supplying alfa romeo 145/146 with thermostas by that time, but not sure. have to take a look on receipts...

I fitted a new Facet manufactured thermostat to mine last year which I'm led to believe are one of the OEM suppliers of thermostats on TS engined cars. From my own experience, OEM manufacturer parts generally seem to last the longest as far as fitting standard parts go.

Is that 90C on the CF2... or 90C on a CF1, which would be too high, seeing as 80C is 90C..

Ihave an alloy top 2L and changed the thermostat as I too was thinking it was running low , around 75 , by changing it it has not made that difference around 78 now. Thing was that prompted it was a suggestion from the ECU , from Fiat ECU that the Lambda reading was out of scope and suggeted the car was running cold so affirming my thoughts to change it, alas it was not to be . I will have to check if the fault is still there, or change the sensor?

The alloy top motore with the "80C" gauge has a gauge whose markings are incorrect. 80C is actually 90C... and the later cars (plastic tops) has the same gauge but with 90C where previously it had 80C.

So 75-78 on the alloy top is actually 85-88... which is is consistent with the thermostat (opens at 86C).

The fan should come on at "82" (real 92C).

not worried. I usually use this babe for short runs, and, once warmed up, temperature never gets lower than the one the picture below. I'm waiting for things to get worse, I guess...

anyway, I'm not sure what to read in the marks between 40ºC and 80ºC and between 80ºC and 120ºC

I have read people saying 70ºC and 90ºC and others 60ºC and 100ºC...

Hey thanks for that, wish I knew that before spending £56 .
I will have to check the heater dial now as I had to take the dials off 8mths ago due to a mouse getting trapped in the ducts and when the knob went back on it could been put on a couple of clicks out.

Confirmed by FECU the temp indicated while running is around 82 and the Fan is coming on at 88-90 although gauge is 78-80.
