Alfa 146 - Backfiring when the weather is cold

Hi all

I have just recently bought an Alfa 146 1.4 litre which i taught was running perfect when i bought it but i am having trouble when the weather is cold. When i start it up the car backfires and splutters and there is a massive loss in power nearly to the extent of the car stalling...

Can anyone help me, i unplugged the lambda and MAF and i still had the same problem.

Engine temperature sensor is the first place I would look. These are relatively cheap to replace compared to the other components.
