146 Temp Sensor\Thermostat

Well I hooked up the 146 ('99 2.0 ti) to the laptop again this morning to see if the errors had returned, and sure enough it is reporting problems with the Lambda Sensor and the Water Temp Sensor.

From what I've read on here over the last week or so, the thermostat also has a habit of failing and a symtom is temps down to 60-70 when crusing. This is defnitely something I see with this car. So I figured the thermostat should be cheap replacement. However when I looked on eBay they are all complete housings. Do I really need to replace the complete housing or can I just get a thermostat??

I've ordered a Lambda Sensor, and I'm looking for a water sensor. I'll probably also get sparks and an air filter while I'm at it.

The thermostat comes as a complete unit in its housing.

Can anybodt tell me which housing should be on the 2.0 Twin Spark, Plastic Top.

I reckon it should be this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ALFA-ROMEO...item336fafa847

But it doesn't list the model. The Temp sensor is the White 3 Wire Type if that makes a difference.

I'm guessing that if the temp is too low, then the thermostat must be stuck open. If this is the case it can be tested by removing it, and seeing if it's open. Does anybody know if this possible with the housings?

The same thermostat is used across all TS models from 1.6 to 2.0 (both alloy and plastic top) so that one is fine, yes.

EDIT: The only difference is the plastic pipe coming off the side. SOme have a "T" shaped pipe and some have an "L" shaped pipe so you just need to make sure the ne you buy matches yours. Only the early cars had the "T" pipe design so yours should have an "L" pipe which matches that one on eBay.

Removing a stat to see if it is open does not prove, if it is closed, that it is working correctly. Many stats, due to age, will fully close but still open early and make the car run cooler than it should. My sons 147 was one of them!

Thermostat was stuck open about 3mm, so effectively permantely open.

Now replaced. Temp gets fairly quickly upto 90deg and appears to stay there +/- 5deg while been driven.

Just waiting for my oil filter to arrive, then I can do that, as it has obviously been neglected. Oil filter is completely rusted no sign of any paint at all on the canister. I know it's in an exposed place, but I bet that has happened in 12 months.
