New 146 Owner

Hi all, I've been having a nosey around, so I thought I'd ask a few questions

Bought a '99T 2.0ti 146 a couple of weeks ago, and when we got it, it kept cutting out and flashing the injector light. While driving it, it felt like crap in the fuel lines, so I figured while I was waiting for my OBD adapter to arrive, I ran the fuel tank as low as possible, chucked in some injector cleaner, half a tank of fuel, and drive it like I stole it for 50 miles.

Sure enough that appears to have solved the problem for now.

So when the leads arrived, I downloaded FiatECUScan and hooked the car up. The only two faults were a Lambda Sensor and Water Sensor issue. I reset these, and they haven't reappeared yet. Although the does seem rather hesitant at arrounf 2-3000 reves, which i guess is when you are about to sppol the turbo up, or it is spooling down. To me this does tie in with the Lambda problem, but no errors codes yet. So for the time being I'm happy to leave this like it is, and keep an eye on it.

The problem that has got me baffled is, after 10mins at motorway speed both the ABS and Airbag light comes on, turning the ignition off resets the problem, but it returns again after returning to motorway speed for a couple of mins. Having played on an empty motorway last night, the appears to be no pattern to when the fault occurs, i.e. it is not related to temp, a specific speed, time driven at speed, etc. but it is predictable that it will come on shortly after getting to motorway speed. Does anybody have any ideas?

the misfire is likely to be a faulty coil pack on cylinder No 1, oil getting slopped around when refilling finds its way there and kills the coil, cheap and easy swap, lots in breakers thanks to lunched bottom ends and snapped belts.

ABS? are all the tyres the correct size? I sometimes get this on wifeys 147 after putting the winter tyres on and back again.

Airbags, dunno, temperamental things....

My gut feeling is it's more likely the MAF or a Lambda but I'll check out the coil pack see if it looks oily etc. just in case.

Does anybody know what the correct size tyre for the 146 was orginally?

The ABS and Airbag warning light come on at exactly the same time, so I guess it's related in someway.

Other than during ignition switch on, the only other time the airbag light should come on is if there's s fault. If this happens then it won't go off again of it's own accord and needs to be reset with a diagnostics machine.

The fact that both the ABS and airbag lights come on and go off at exactly the same time smells of a bodge job to me whereby someone may have wired the ABS light to the airbag light to fool someone into thinking that the airbag system is working when it's not (i.e. to fool an MOT tester even though the airbag light wasn't part of an MOT until this year, but not everyone actually knew that). Either that or you have a short somewhere in the instrument cluster. If I was you I would take the cluster apart to investigate which will either confirm or eliminate this theory.

I won't be posting on this forum any more. If you want to know why and/or you want answers to some 145/146 related questions then please feel free to pop over to and post on the alfa145.com forum where you will find me with the same member name.

I have now disabled all my private messaging options on here but you can PM me over on the alfa145.com forum if you need to.
