Advice on buying a 145

I am looking to buy a 145 Cloverleaf and would like some advice from the experienced guys among you.

What should I look out for?
What is the significance of the Red key?
I have seen one with blue cloverleaf logos - what does this mean?
Is there a known problem with the wipers?
Any other problems I should look for when viewing a car???

Anyone know of one for sale where I could swap in my wife's Polo? (Don't worry, she knows!!)

Your help would be very much appreciated.
David

Re: Advice on buying a 145

Hello Wheelnut
Good choice of car!

You should look/listen out for :
Clonks from the front suspension as the bushes are feeble and wear quite quickly
Check cambelt and balancer belt have been replaced WITH their pulleys within the last 3 years, and if not, allow £400 or so for a proper job.
Listen for a diesel like clattery noise from the top of the engine on start up. It could be the variator that's broken. It should be replaced when the cambelt is changed.
Check the engine idles OK without too much "hunting".
Check the oil is up to the level and clean.
Check the footwells are dry and there are no leaks from bodywork or heater.
Check under chassis for any corrosion or bad jacking.
Check the CD changer is still in the boot and the headunit has it's removable front still on it.
They all have red ignition keys! What you need to check is that you also have a Brown master key. You need this in case you lose the everday red keys. Without it, the car is near enough worthless!
Blue cloverleaves mean nothing other than the factory stuck the wrong badges on the UK cars. Don't be told it's a special edition!!
The early cars had a very silly design of wiper blade yes.
There was a facelift in 1999 with round front fog lights. There is little to choose between the two versions in terms of driving or performance. You would be better with a good early car than a bad late one!
Happy Shopping.

Re: Advice on buying a 145

Wipers: Grease can get onto the electrical contacts, causing a bad connection which in turn makes the wipers judder and stall 1/2 across the screen. Costs nothing but 1/2 and hour to fix.

Rear dampers are prone to wear after 90k

Spark Plugs arn't cheap - can cost up to £100 for a set.

The front seats are weak and prone to collapse on older cars. Check to see if the seat is sprung and slides when you try to get in the back of the car.

Blue cloverleaf?

It's a special edition
If you have blue cloverleaves on your car, then you're blessed by the blue cloverleaf bear (see avatar). He looks after you in a kind of guardian angel stylee.

...

Ohhhhh, Rick. You spoilt it

Oooo. That's low. Very low.

Alfie ain't scruffy! She's georgeous. She's got the best engine, best alloys, sorted wipers, best colour cloverleaves and she's chipped.

Probably the best 145 in the UK.
There. I've said it.
She's a doll.

Nasty man.

Thanks again for your help. I have not bought Phatso's (1996 Cloverleaf in Red) car - pick it up on Saturday.
I will introduce myself and, no doubt, start asking loads of really stupid questions when I am mobile with it.
