Help Required Please...........

Hi,

Just attempting to change the Gear Selector Plate on my 147 Manual. I am struggling to remove the ball joint. As far as I am aware you I have to squeeze the white plastic tabs and pull, is that correct or am I doing something wrong? Also, should I be able to do this by hand?
