-97 146 1.6 TS Ignition unit whereabouts..

Hello, people. I bought a -97 146 1.6 TS a couple a years ago and the problem is that 146s have never been imported into Finland. Now I'm having some good ol' ignition problems here in Finland and my friend (a self announced Alfa-expert and my trusty mechanic-sort-of) says the fault lies in the ignition unit, but is unable to find it. How he determined the fault without finding it is beyond me, but anyway. Can someone, please, tell me where that ignition unit is?

If it's a phase 1 car with a metal cover on the engine then the ECU is in the passenger footwell underneath a hatch under the carpet. If it's a phase 2 car with a silver painted plastic cover on the engine then the ECU is mounted on top of the throttle body under the bonnet.
