Radiator Fan won't come on ???

Hi -I drive a 2001 146 2.0 TI and about a month ago I had the thermostat changed as I was losing temperature at speed. This worked and all was fine then the Alfa curse struck again and now the Radiator fan won't come on . So first I the engine had no idea how hot the engine was and cooled it constantly and now it knows its too hot but can't bloody do anything about it !! ha ha ( well it would be funny if it wasnt such a problem)

When the temp hits 92 ish you can hear the idle quicken as it would just a the fan kicks in but the fan doesnt kick in. The fan will turn without too much effort by hand so its not seized.

how would i check if its the motor or the thermostat. I am pretty sure it doesn't have a rad thermal switch as its a 2001 and the thermostat has three pins not 2

most likelt to be corroded connection on either
the wire to the fan, easy,
the relay, easy but not so easy to find (tucked under the black slam panel , just to the left of the bonnet catch)
or
a bad earth
dead fan

I would start by disconnecting the fan, just follow the wire until you come to a two pin connector, pull apart and run a live and negative wire off the battery, put one on one pin, the other on the remaining one and if it start up, you know thw fan is OK and its the wiring/relay/contacts somewhere and just work through easy one.

Be careful as the fan will suddenly start up at speed (with any luck) and you want to make sure you fingers are clear.

Well it turns out it was a sesnor problem which is odd as it has a brand new thermostat and i thought this controlled the fan on the 2001 model ? Anyway garage replaced switch , fan on ........ ****ing motor siezed !!! ha ha ha - now i need to find a new fan assembly Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Anyone know where I can get a new fan assembly - they are hard to track down ???

the part is exclusive to the 145/146, try breakers or ebay, just make sure you get one for aircon if you have it as the non aircon ones are different. Otherwise may well be the dealer.

The thermostat does not control the fan, the temp sensor sitting in it does, I suspect the garage put the old sensor in to the new stat, not normally a problem to be fair. Does seem a bit of a coincedence, but its difficult to know what they could have done to break it TBH.

Nope...the fan on your car is controlled directly by the ECU. The ECU uses the temp sensor mounted in the top of the thermostat to detemine the coolant temp and theus when to switch the fan on or off.

Try some of the breakers if you want a secondhand fan assembly, otherwise it's a dealer only part if you want a brand new one.
