help required with side airbag

i have been having problems with my side airbag connections and found it necessary to remove the one on the passenger seat.
I have the grey momo leather btw.
i've had two wire plug apart (brown wire and blue wire)
to check the pins are tight and clean
and i'm not sure if i've put them back in the right way.
can anyone supply a picture, or an accurate description of which way around they should be or point me in the right direction. i'm aware of the risk of connecting it the wrong way around so really need to get it right 1st time. i know i could look at the driver side bag but i don't wish to disturb the wiring as there are no faults on that side............yet!!!!!

Re: help required with side airbag

The 2-wire connector is only present on the passenger side and is for the "passenger present" sensor in the seat. This is simply an on/off (open/closed contact) switch so it doesn't actually matter which way round you connect the wires.

The actual airbag sensors and capsules themselves all have 3-wire connectors going to them and the order of wires in those do actually matter so if you disasemble any of those connectors then make sure you take pictures first or write down the order of the wires

Re: help required with side airbag

yes i know i should of taken pictures etc.
the configuration on my car is different. probably due to it being a w reg facelift 146 and having the momo leather.
it does not have a passenger present sensor in the seat. The wire for the airbag routes up through the seat and connects directly to the top of the side airbag. I have followed the wire with my hand.
the connector plug only has two wires. one blue and one black.

If you bear with me I'll have a look at mine tonight when I get home from work and take some photos (I've got a V-reg facelift so it will have the same setup as yours). I was going to check last but I only remembered after it was too dark.

Re: help required with side airbag

Right, just had a close look at my underseat connectors and there is only one 3-wire connector under each seat. Are you sure yours are only a 2-wire connectors? It should be the same as mine which uses a TRW MY99 Airbag ECU.

Anyway, this is the wiring configuration for each of the two 3-pin underseat connectors...

Driver Seat:-
  • Blue -> Grey/Blue
  • Brown -> Grey/White
  • Black -> Black

Passenger Seat:-
  • Blue -> Grey/Black
  • Brown -> Grey/Yellow
  • Black -> Black

Re: help required with side airbag

i'm actually talking about the airbag itself which is mounted in the side of the passenger seat. it has a black plug with a yellow insert and two wires, brown and blue. the plug on the airbag unit itself which aforementioned plug goes into is a luminous green colour and has two gold pins in it. airbag has to be removed from seat to gain access.

Re: help required with side airbag

In that case I'm afraid I don't know as I've never seen the wiring or airbags or components which are actually buried inside the seat. I think your only option will be to take the other side apart and have a look.

Re: help required with side airbag

yes i think i will have to. i'm in the motor trade and have connections with bosch and autodata and an independant alfa speacialist and they all say the same. passenger seat should have present switch in seat and should have three wires. my car is like the odd one out and no-one knows anything about it. oh well cheers anyway.

There is no "passenger present" switch on any 145/146 manufactured after June 1999. This is because those cars all use the TRW MY99 airbag ECU. Prior to that date, the TRW MY97 and Becker airbag ECU's were used in the 145/146 and these DID have the passenger present switch in the passenger seat.

As per my previous posts I have no idea of the actual wires in the connectors at the airbag module inside the seat itself, only at the underseat connectors (as specified in one of my previous posts in this thread). You will have to take the drivers seat apart and have a look at that one to be 100% sure which way round the wires should connect in the passenger seat.
