Re: What speed was i doing????

Well i just went through the process of working out top speed using gallo's maths.....and if the rev limiter doesnt kick in til 8k revs, that gives a theoretical top speed of 165 mph......think i may have worked it out wrong......

By the way, when should the rev limiter kick in? If mine is not until 8k does that mean i've prob had a remap at some point?

Assuming you have the standard gearbox ratios and wheels (195/55/15) then...
  • (((8000 / 0.946) / 3.562) * 60 * 0.0011622643602306572480314960629921) = 165.5621687078414860214402287714
...so 165.5 MPH

What mods does your car have and/or does it have a squadra chip fitted?

No rafe

You just can't tell the difference between 8 & 7 - The 8 is like looking at 2 footballs one stacked on top of the other

Re: What speed was i doing????

Mines the plastic top so wouldnt that be a remap as opposed to a chip?? Thats what nigel from alfa tuning told me when i was looking into it, but if they normally limit before 8k i'm wondering if its already been done? Got bmc cda with freeflow exhaust

And i have 195/55 on the front and 205/50 on the back (to help with lift of oversteer)

Parameters for a standard 145QV/146ti:-
  • Tyre Width = 195 millimetres
  • Tyre Profile = 55%
  • Wheel Diameter (without tyre) = 15 inches
  • 5th Gear Ratio = 0.946
  • Final Drive Ratio = 3.562

Calculations:-
  1. Wheel Diameter [Inches] = ((((Tyre Width * (Tyre Profile / 100)) * 2) / Millimetres Per Inch) + Wheel Diameter) = ((((195 * (55 / 100)) * 2) / 25.4) + 15) = 23.44488188976377952755905511811

  2. Wheel Circumference [Inches] = (Wheel Diameter * Pi) = (23.44488188976377952755905511811 * 3.14159265359) = 73.654268709167125984251968503937

  3. One Wheel Revolution [Miles] = (Wheel Circumference * Miles Per Inch) = (73.654268709167125984251968503937 * 0.00001578) = 0.0011622643602306572480314960629921

  4. Maximum Speed [Miles Per Hour] = (((Maximum RPM / 5th Gear Ratio) / Final Drive Ratio) * Minutes Per Hour * One Wheel Revolution) = (((7000 / 0.946) / 3.562) * 60 * 0.0011622643602306572480314960629921) = 144.86689761936130026876020029863

So with no aerodynamic wind resistance at all, achieveable top speed is 145 MPH before the rev limiter kicks in just after 7000 RPM. If a higher top speed is reached then it either means oversized tyres, a longer 5th gear (which some cars do have), or a modified ECU modified with an increased rev limiter speed.
Now we talking..... I like these big figure calculations
keep them coming.

Must add though, I think you blokes are doing something wrong. I easily got 184mph.......... Then I changed back to fourth and over took the chap in front of me, who was by the way in a Koenigsegg.

I really think you should explore the cars full rev range.... You know, up there at about 18 000.

On a serious note, Your satnav can be affected rather badly if you travelling fast and then go under a couple of bridges. Not sure why, but check it out....

I remember when we put rugby boys in kit

Always funny when you smash them in the head with your helmet and they are concussed saying can he do that - can he do that

By the way Martin Johnson - Loved american football - but would admit that he didn't actually like how physical it was - so he chose Rugby....

He was in the Junior squad when I played for Leicester Panthers many moons ago - how old am I

Re: What speed was i doing????

I managed 120 - 125ish at about 03.30 last Monday morning on the M4.. and that was in my 156 1.6 (Used half a tank of petrol though)

Took about an hour to get home (near Heathrow) from Bristol, best if I don't drive in a bad mood again. But road was empty.

You want to be careful speeding on the M4 around that area because there are a number of SPECS cameras around the Reading junctions (10 and 11). These are the cameras that read your number plate between two points and then calculate your average speed. You can't miss them because they're on overhead gantries and are painted bright yellow.

Re: What speed was i doing????

I got 125mph outta my 1.4 according to the speedo which is wrong I know. But it was at 6.5k revs so should be above 115 anyway. Running the standard specs in wheel dimensions only thing that is different is that they are lighter wheels than standard

I have owned a couple and the most I have ever managed was 130mph on a slight downhill stretch, and they simply wouldn't go any faster.
Then you can't have been trying hard enough, a few years ago on a private long downhill road in Burnley I hit an indicated 135 in a 90 bhp Saxo VTR and it was still going but I had to slow for a corner.

The trouble is that American football is just physical, If you could freeze the game at any one point 2 thirds of the players have no idea where the ball is, they are too busy beating the crap out of each other. You're not on your own though Chris there's a bloke at work claims to understand it as well

Re: What speed was i doing????

ok then cheers for your replies.
for your information guys (and gals) here are the mods my car has
K+N panel filter
air box modified with cold air feed from front bumper grill,
Kent cams stage 3 higher lift and duration cam shafts,
cylinder head modified as follows-
inlet ports enlarged, polished and flowed
big valve conversion with 3 angle valve seats and brass guides.
all valve ports polished and flowed.
exhaust ports enlarged, polished and flowed.
custom made exhaust manifold 4-2-1 matches enlarged bore of exhaust ports.
custom made downpipe, decat section, stainless bigger bore catback system.
bottom end mods-
lightened and balanced bottom end
(crankshaft ground off and balanced with pistons)
uprated shells, genuine new pistons and rings.
flywheel lightened. New genuine variator.
full remap and rolling road setup at Camco 88 in warrington
( big big thanks to them they are the best!!!!!)
after tuning made 204 bhp on dyno
and 223 nm peak torque.
ok i am running it on standard suspension with standard teledial wheels
on standard 195/55/15 tyres.
I specified to Camco that i did not want the rev limit to be raised, that i would prefer mid range power to top end power and that i want torque rather than bhp.
when i pulled my max speed it was on a dead flat stretch of track which is sheltered inbetween two hills on the m56 inbetween chester and runcorn heading north.

Re: What speed was i doing????

That might just get you to the magical 150. Satnavs pretty accurate. I had a Civic Type R and checked against a mates Accord Type R a few years back. Both maxed out, civic pulling slighly ahead, and the stanav said 150. Mate was well peeved, as I crawled by him

I know the road and you can get a fair run up before the hill at Runcorn.
