Actively seeking well maintained V6 GTV, pref Ph2.

Must be entirely rust free and ideal as a longterm keeper to be fussed over, with maintenance up to date, incl suspension overhaul, timing belt, clutch etc. Ideally Q2 corrected and oil cooler etc replaced.

Light Silver with Red leather or prof re-sprayed red, metallic red with cream leather

Mods such as custom stainless exhaust, larger wheels would be considered

No custom spoilers (pref no aero kit or Plus kit) and no stiffened / lowered springs.

Full history, particularly last ten yrs with specialist - sub 80k miles preferred and free of principal faults

Familiar with current values and cash waiting at market rate.

The car will be spoilt and polished to perfection :)

A very specific requirement there. I got mine last year a very sorted example with aero kit, BMC, Q2, FSH, poly bushed etc for £3.3K. Totally sorted all I have spent is petrol and tax, a loud exhaust and undersealed.

I think £3-4K max; some of the asking prices are plainly over priced; hence why they have not sold.

My car would also fit the bill, other than the requirement for standard springs. If I ever wanted to sell would be thinking £6k minimum, values are on the up for low mileage, well maintained cars with sensible mods.

Good luck with your search OP, if I was in the market I would speak to Ned at Autolusso, he will be aware of cars potentially coming on the market I would think.

Cheers

Advertising it with 18" Team Dynamics wheels and not including them in the price doesn't exactly inspire me to pick up the phone!

That's the second V6 GTV to sell for £2500 or less this week, I think someone really has got a good deal with this one though.

Interesting point. I was keen to sell the car quickly (4 cars on the drive and there's way too much shuffling in my life!) and I believe it got pretty good exposure - with thousands of views and hundreds of watchers. The problem, I believe, is more a question of timing - how many people, genuinely interested in a GTV and with the ability/inclination to pay top money want to buy this week - which is I think is at the root of what you're getting at.

Time and space is money - so there's ongoing expense with keeping the car, plus a lack of funds available for getting the remaining one nice and sorted. If I wanted to maximize the selling price then I would absolutely agree with you.

As a personal point, the Q2, the lightweight flywheel and the exhaust make it so much more fun to drive than my other one, I'd have found the temptation to drive it around irresistible - probably incurring further expense like having to get the power steering leak fixed, the flexis replaced and the rear tyres done.

Going off at an unforgivable tangent, Does anybody else find the big brake upgrade to be expensive but without much merit?

I think Clive's got a great deal on a car he already knows that should make him good money. Good luck to him and the eventual owner.

I wrote to you on ebay offering to top offers if disappointing - although higher mileage than i wanted I was happy at £2.8k - also expressed interest in your other car - had i known you were a forum member, it would probably have clinched the deal anywhere under £3k

Unfortunately this websites classifieds section is a running joke. It would be just about the last place in the world I would list anything for sale.

HTH :)

griffster, I am pleased that you offered Mister Bumble more and you changed your mileage requirement for that particular car. I think you may have well missed a good car there regardless of the mileage on the odo. The advert showed how much the car was bought for by the previous two times and what had been spent on it since those owners bought it.

I think your requirements may be too specific due to the number of GTV V6s sold new. I think you'll have to compromise on your requirements or double or treble your purchase price to create the car you want. I think the auction shows that good cars can be bought for less than £3K but you may need to be flexible on the exact spec.

Rustneversleeps, regarding the eBay listing by Mister Bumble I thought it was pretty spot on, but then I knew it was his car from this thread:

http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/alfa-gtv-and-916-spider/686481-funny-ad-flea-bay.html

From that advert, and his post in that thread I think I'd find it difficult to have more confidence in the seller and car without seeing them both in the flesh. I wish all eBay adverts so were so good. High resolution photos taken on a sunny day with the current tax disc on the car giving me confidence the photos were current and not from three years ago. I couldn't spot the trolley dents on the flanks.

Mister Bumble, thanks for the 330mm brake question. It was a nice counter to the comment about the difference the single mass flywheel and Q2 makes.

Was I outbid? Were my thoughts on value too low? I wouldn't have been bidding with an eye on residuals or how much I could sell it for or what it was worth in bits.

:)

Having just driven the car 100 miles 'back home' i would say the 330 fr brakes are a definite improvement, I even like the pedal feel.

To the OP, you really should've bid if you truly wanted this car, I doubt you'll find a better one soon for the money.

To 'Mr Bumble', did you ever use the fr fog lights? Nice meeting you by the way.:)

While I agree, the OP should have bid the money he was prepared to pay thereby bagging the car and leaving Mister Bumble without feeling he'd been unfair selling a car outside the auction for more than the highest bid, something I can fully relate to and not just from a sales perspective, the OP doesn't have the wealth of experience you have on GTVs, the parts or network of experts within the trade that you can call upon, and you previously sold that car so you also have insider knowledge on this particular that only the vendor, the previous owner and those that have physically worked on it would have.

What is it the Australians say? 'A fair shake of the ketchup bottle'? The vendor has played fair, the OP could have bid his £2800 or £3K, but you sold that car a few years ago, not many miles ago and it's had a fair bit spent on it since, you had knowledge about that car that the OP didn't have.

It's sour grapes on my part? When I awoke on Sunday I hadn't decided on the maximum bid I'd be prepared to make for it, and I was bidding having not seen or driven it and without having sold it to the previous owner. Considering a GTV V6 is a car people want rather than need and I hardly do any miles in my current car, so buying another could be difficult to justify on a rational basis I am happy with the price I bid.

Just as you share your knowledge about GTVs here to the benefit of people you don't know or aren't customers, I know I've learnt from your posts here, you had previous knowledge of this car. When you got into it to drive it the 100 miles home you knew it probably wasn't a bunny boiler. Another looker has returned to the best little GTV cat house in West Sussex.

Hey Clive

Nice to meet you too. Now you have me confused...

Must confess to not having used the front fog lights because I only ever took the car out of the garage on perfect weather days so as not to expose the bodywork to harsh environmental conditions. Its never seen fog ;)

The only amusing lighting based story that comes to mind relates to the fact the stereo only works with the sidelights on.

I asked a well respected Alfa specialist to rewire the stereo through a switched live. When I pointed out that he'd wired it through a wire that only went live when the ignition and sidelights were on, he obviously offered to have another go.

No, I said, leave it, that's how Alfas work.

By the way, if anybody has studied the history of the car, they might have a guess as to who the Alfa specialist in question might have been...

Cards on the table, it was Paul at A for Alfa.

I'm sure he has enough custom not to need my endorsement, but he's an absolute star. He doesn't have quite the same profile of some specialists that get heavily promoted on this site, but he's spectacularly helpful, relentlessly knowledgeable, astonishing value for money and unlike other specialists of my acquaintance, absolutely exemplifies the values suggested by my own phrase 'that's how Alfas work'.

Thanks for the above info.

Having driven for approx 80 miles in 'silence'(apart fom the lovely exhaust note:thumbs:) with a completely dead radio & therefore no traffic news imagine my suprise when I encountered a very heavy downpour & turned on the front fogs...........Radio 2 loud & clear!!!!!

When I arrived back I also noticed the electric aerial fully extended, so I tried a cd & that worked as well. The AC was nice & cool for the whole journey too.:D

I've adjusted the sound settings & it's really quite good........being an Alpine it should be.

Yeah the stereo has been wired from the light switch, novel, I might leave it like that......it gives the car even more character.

Edit: I thought it was the fr fog switch but that was only due to the slight time delay for the radio to come on being approx the same amount of time for me to turn on the fogs after the side lights.

Thanks again.

Having met Clive, I was left with the absolute conviction that he doesn't do this just for the money because if he did, he'd be insane. He has to make a living on the difference between what he buys cars for and what he sells them for and yes, he does add value somewhere along the line. Given the supply/demand equation for 916's, that isn't going to support a business. Just as well he sells other marques and models.

If I'm absolutely honest, I'd have preferred the car go directly to a fan like you (In The Pass) because of our shared emotional attachment to the marque and the bizarrely invisible bond we share because of our collective insanity. I do think Clive shares in that insanity and ultimately he's more financially invested in it. If other circumstances give him a little bit of an advantage over the rest of us then I think we should forgive him that.

My Uno Turbo had a Voxson? radio cassette. It stopped working. I removed it and took the covers off of it, to only realise afterwards that none of the switchgear in that little panel of the dash lit up when the lights were on. It wasn't the stereo it was probably the feed to that part of the dash.

I previously reversed a Honda into the garage with the radio on, meaning the extended electric antenna made a nice noise as the end of it brushed along the inside of the opened garage door as the car went into the garage. So there's a benefit to wiring the stereo and aerial to the lights! ;)

My late father never owned an Alfa. He had a Fiat loaner once, and learnt to drive in a Fiat based Lada. He owned a Honda once.

well gents, a civilised thread by genuine enthusiasts .. I would include myself in being a dedicated fan of the 916 - I am often heard sighing ..'I love my Alfie' and talk to him endlessly :)

As i mentioned in my mail, your car would have been slowly restored to 'better than new' with much affection lavished continuously..

Unfortunately, I am not familiar with how to actually buy on Ebay (only browse) hence the old fashioned direct letter approach (approaching 60!)

Clive, let me know if you are feeling generous, failing that, Mister B, my other offer stands any time, particularly the next 12 mths

This car doesn't need restoring just a good clean & a few minor jobs: down pipes, pas leak, rear discs etc....nothing expensive.

It's worth what I paid without the expensive modifications, this black GTV sold for similar money & that didn't have any of them: http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/alfa...the-most-famous-gtv-on-the-road-for-sale.html

I've just sold a GTV for well over £5k which had all the same modifications + Konis & Eibachs but not the expensive 330 brakes, approx the same mileage as well but not a full history & more owners but still a lovely car: http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/alfa...sale-q2-gta-clutch-konis-eibachs-etc-etc.html

I wasn't looking to buy anymore GTVs at the moment but this one came to my attention due to this thread: http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/alfa-gtv-and-916-spider/686481-funny-ad-flea-bay.html

Not only was Mr Bumble's advert endearing but the value of the extras, apparent good condition, + I'd previously sold the car to it's former owner in July 2010, made me interested in owning it again. A lot can happen to a car in 4 years but fortunately it's all been good to this one.....including approx £4k worth of upgrades, a cambelt & services.

Bargains do come along occasionally but you can't always expect to find one when you want one.

I've only had a short time on it today but just take a look at the pictures below & see what difference half an hour spent on the engine bay makes. Overall cosmetically this car is very good, mechanically even better.

I'm currently undecided whether to fully prepare it as it is or to swap the engine, gearbox & brakes onto another GTV & then sell it as a more standard example...it would still easily achieve £3k+.

I think you might have to up your budget for the high spec car that you're looking for, either that or beat the likes of me(& others) to the next one IF another one comes along....sorry.

Clive
