Is the1.9 jtd 16v gt as specialist a job as a 3.2 or v6 with regards to the timing and use of camlock tools? Wondering if can get away with using local garage who charges very cheap hourly rate but is very competant. As it's the same engine as used it vauxhalls etc he may have the camlocks already if required?

Its a very easy belt to change, possible without the special timing pins but is best to use them, they are the same as for the vauxhall z19dth engine.

A belt kit and the important water pump is about £100 and it is about a 3 hour job.

I expect your local garage will of done quite a few vectras etc so dont let them give you the ooh its an Alfa so will be tricky story.

Speak to Paul at AforAlfa. He's in Bucks, and is excellent and very reasonably priced.
Cheapest I know for cambelt changes.

Thanks, I know Paul well.. he is cheap at £270 including waterpump... but the local garage seem to have a fondness for my girlfriend and have only ever charged her parts, no labour costs on her previous car, an Astra .. so thinking they'll prob do the cambelt for very cheap too :p WIll check if he's done many of the 1.9's before but I'd guess so, they're a busy garage, and hopefully they have the camlock tools? Although the guide on alfaworkshop just talks about marking the belt up.. so.. not sure how essential it is?

It's a good question.. maybe not completely free, but rediculously cheap. Maybe £20 an hour.. he usually does it after normal opening hours and takes it home as pocket money. She was always broke before we met and he used to look after her as a friendly thing. Hopefully it's all above board
