I've cracked it..Literally unfortunately, but you were right about the difficult to find plugs higher up. In fact I just couldn't find them and two remained stuck.

..So if anyone's got a spare boot trim for sale...?!

Anyway the washer feed pipe had come loose from the sprayjet and there was no obvious explanation (i.e snagging of the pipe). It doesn't appear to fit "positively" say, with a click so when I refit it I will use a tiny dot of superglue as a precaution.
