I find once you get the beep followed by the 'limited cruising range' message the gauge hovers above the empty line for a while, and then you can visibly see the needle move down flush with the empty line.
Only done that twice before - both times my bum cheeks ate some of my trousers and Mrs Goram screamed blue murder at me!
