I'm happy to drive to and from work with the light on......thats about 90 miles for me, I know I can get 600 from a tank now and typically the light comes on at about 520-540 on the trip.
The gauge on mine is pretty accurate. Each segment on the dial does me about 75 miles, I'd ignore the range on the dash and fill up pretty smartly after the needle hits the zero (always assuming you wish to push it that far!)
