Quite agree; a silly fad that is quite unnecessary in UK; have had the pleasure of driving a Fiat 500 but there is NO side light option between DLR and full headlight usage. The sooner the fad passes the better. (I assume it's a fad; please don't tell me this will be legislation)
What does it take to turn on the side lights? especially if you want to make the car more visible in low light levels etc, that's what side lights are for, both front and REAR.
