Hi All,

This is my final plead for any form of advice/help on the clonking sound I am getting from the front of my 156!

Please bear in mind, I am 99.99% sure that this is not suspension related, but basically what I am getting is a clonking sound somewhere under the engine area when moving off from a junction/traffic lights. There is no vibration when driving and the car drives in a straight line and brakes in a perfectly straight line. Just to add, I have recently replaced the following myself:

- Steering Rack
- Powerflexed Upper Wishbones
- Lower Wishbones
- Eibach ARB
- Koni Shock Absorbers & Springs
- Strut Top Mounts
- ARB Drop Links
- Track Rod Ends

My thought on this clonking sound is that it could be engine mount related, but it may well not be. I replaced the engine steady bar (above the cambelt) a while back, but no difference made.

This could also be related to the other problem I have always had with the car, which is a rattling/grinding noise under acceleration, in a high gear under load. For example, accelerating in 6th from 40mph. The more load I put on the engine, the louder it gets.

This may sound mad, but please bear with me as I am not a mechanic, but if it was a worn engine mount, would it be possible for the driveshafts to be rubbing on something, like the suspension fork for example, as the engine would be trying to rock backwards surely?

This is the only thing I can think of, as mad as it may sound, but having replaced every single suspension component on the front of the car within the last year, I am now completely lost.

So if anyone can help, the cars symptomns are:

- Grinding/rattling noise under accleration in a high gear.
- Engine does sounds like it has movement when switching off (for a second or so after).
- Knock coming from front suspension area, somewhere underneath or in the engine bay (only when moving away from standstill - If I set off from a standstill slowly at 3,000 rpm there is no clonk!)

If it helps, I have also had a fully reconditioned 3.0 V6 engine installed by a specialist in July last year, with exactly the same symptomns.

If anyone has any suggestion, however minor or any piece of advice it would be greatly appreciated. I haven't taken the car to a specialist yet as I am quite far off from one (my nearest one would be Jamie Porter I beleive) but that is my next resort!

HELP !!!!!

Many Thanks,
Tony.

If it's the engine mounts you should be able to jack the car up, take the (front) wheel off and get somebody to spin the hub and check if there's any movement from underneath.
Did you have any bother getting the koni's on - the wheel bearings take a bit of stick during this process.
Not much help but hope you get it sorted.

top_man_eldo, did you ever get this sorted? i think i may have the same problem as you. when at a standstill and trying to pull away i get a knocking noise as the clutch reaches biting point, this happens in first or reverse but cant really hear anything when driving, just the inital pulling away.

i also get a noise when changing gear, similar to a sort of 'chirping' when changing gear for a couple of seconds or load on engine e.g. going up a steep hill in fourth the noise is then constant until i change down a gear.

hope someone is able to help. clutch is new, gearbox has been taken out and anything that was wrong is now fixed and cv joint is also new.

hope someone is able to help

cheers
