Just been quoted £550 to change coil pack three!OMG can someone tell me how to do thi

Hi everyone,
My car has been losing power and chugging so I took it to the garage this morning to have a diagnostic run on it (cost £54.00). It came back as saying that coil pack three wasnt working properly and they have quoted me over £500 to fix this!Jesus christ,I am a single mum of three and to say I cant afford this is an understatement!I have been reading other peoples posts regarding their coil packs and it seems that some people have managed to change them themselves. I am a pretty handy person with stuff (DIY etc) and just wondered if someone could let me know if there is a manual online or instructions where I could change these myself, I see that I might be able to get the whole set off Ebay for about £40
Thanks for any advice

I think you can tell this garage to go jump of the pier at Southend and take a swim (preferably northwards) all the way to the Arctic Circle:lol:

Just get the second hand part from ebay and simply get a specialist to change it (will take about 10-15 mins max).

Good luck:)

I think that would be my coil pack on ebay your looking at :)

Here is the link, its the cheapest pack on ebay at the moment.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Alfa-147-coil...Q5fVehiclesQ5fCarPartsQ5fSMQQsalenotsupported

£500 is just a joke,Its easy to replace, you will need a socket set because the screws are really tight, and they are torx screws, the socket set should have the correct ends.

take the plastic cover off the engine, the coils are exposed, pull the 4 clips from the front of each coil, unscrew the coil pack, and pull it out.then put new coil pack in put clips in,push the small spark plugs down till they click in place, screw it back in but not too tight and make sure to screw the ground wire in which is located to the right.

Its easy,i did it and im usually hopeless with mechanical stuff.

its very easy to do but you will need a cr-v m7 tourqe bit to fit bolts any tool shop should have one remove plastic cover 4 bolts hopefully you will get full set already on metal plate remove push on conectors and three bolts holding plate pull lose plug leads up abit then pull metal plate up then do reverse its 5 min job if i was local to you i would do it for you that garage should be ashamed

To be honest I reckon that quote isn't far off, a new coil pack for my Stilo was £108 from FIAT and £83 for after market, that was for one, there are four on an engine so £500 isn't far off if you throw the name Alfa Romeo into the mix.

However, there are always cheaper alternative, as highlighted in this thread, well done people for saving another Alfa punter some money.............................

but ... only 1 of the coil packs needs to be replaced ...

I will never let the wife take the car for an MOT again, the last garage tried to con her out of 500 quid for changing the top arms and some headlamp bulbs . As soon as i went down to ask why they were charging this much, they suddenly knocked nearly 300 quid off the price. Got a man some of us know to do the work for a lot less.:D

Hope you get your car sorted out soon Sam :)

if you buy off ebay you will hopefully get the set if not you will need another tourque bit to change just one if that is the case buy a cheap set you wont use it that often or get the one to take the set off then take the set to a tool shop to match the smaller one you will need

I've got some for sale if you want one cheap. They're from a '98 156. Easy enough to change, but you'll need a couple of special 'bits', as mala says above.

If you're DIY-ing, it might be better to change all 4, just in case you've got more than one dud one, or the garage hasn't diagnosed it correctly...

Having said that, you could just take the plastic engine cover off, start the engine, and disconnect each of the plastic clip-on connectors to the coil packs one at a time. The one that makes the least difference to the running of the engine is the suspicious one.

£550 though...
