Alfa 156 2.0 ts cutting out - rpm sensor already changed

Hi
My Alfa 156 is switching off as I reduce speed to stop and also sometimes when stopped the idle just dips and it switches off. Both of these however don't happen all the time. It starts up without waiting. RPM sensor replaced 6 months ago.

Whats interesting though is this problem started around the same time as my heat gauge hitting the red light while doing 100kms and then as quickly going to half. Its been fluctuating since. Then the fuel gauge went to 0 and the light came on even though I had over quarter tank fuel.

My mechanic thinks(after checking other things) that its an electrical fault but after 5 days is no closer to the solution. I would appreciate you views/suggestions.

check the battery connections for loose clamps .... i had a 1.8 TS that would cut out at various revs & i blame dthe TDC sensor or bad wiring loom issues, in the long run it turne dout that the + termical 'looked' tight but in fact could be removed by a simple twist ... after looking closer at it, while the nut was full [ obverly tightened by the previous owner ] the termimals was misshaped. So a few suttle adjustments & a new nut its clamps 100% good now.

so chekc the baiscs even if they look right they may not be.

NOTE the + lead is held onto the battery by a 10mm nut + bolt ... also there are 2 + heades screws so make sur eto open the 2 + screws to determine if the lead is fully tight.

Thanks guys. Just spoke to the mechanic. They checked all connections, with no effect. He has put in another ECU to see if that was the problem. Hope to get some response later today. I hope it isn't the ECU.

Also The heat gauge goes up but the car wasn't actually overheating and the software didn't detect anything.

I have a similar problem that occurs time to time.

Going at low speeds or slowing to stop at a red light, when it downshifts automatically the revs will sometimes drop to almost zero before the gearbox kicks them back up. Every now and then it won't be enough and it will stall. More annoying than a serious problem and it seems to be effected by cold weather.

Admittedly I'm no mechanic or auto-elec but what gives you the impression it is an electrical issue?

Hi

So much for an Alfa specialist. After being assured the problem was solved by modifying some throttle mechanism, I drive the car home and after about 30 mins the car switches off. Far worse though the heat gauge goes to max and I have to stop the car.

Managed to get home. Water in the water tank was boiling. Seems like a thermostat problem. May have avoided blowing a gasket. Started fine this morning but to be safe had it towed back to the mech.

I have had the car for over 2 and a half years and I have enjoyed the short periods when everything worked and the car ran beautifully but I think my Alfa and I will soon have to part ways.
