Good on you for sticking it out Martin, pleased to hear that you got there in the end, though surprised that all concerned ****ed you about so much before finally getting around to replacing the flywheel, which was the instant diagnosis of a Honda dealer friend (just two miles down the road from Meridien), when I described your symptoms to him. Honda dealer friend keeps telling me that I'll regret buying an Alfa, but I haven't so far, in fact I still love it to bits. I bought the same model as you from the same dealer last July, and so far no complaints at all, either with the car or with Meridien, hoping very much that things stay that way.
