recorded history (a very small time) I'm sure i read somewhere that if the earths life is the equivalent to a 24 hr period then man has been around for about 7 seconds!!!! Not to say that its never happened. There is a little known fact that in our history (i believe about half a million years ago if memory serves) it was on average 15 degrees centigrade hotter across the globe than it is now........followed by an ice age, then warm spell, then ice age etc etc....
