Hello out there

I am considering the purchase of my first Alfa after a number of abortive attempts. I have seen some 147 Selespeeds for what seems silly money - 11 grand for a brand new car, they are imports. Where is the catch? I have read conflicting things about reliabilty and the performance of selespeed. What is the received wisdom.

I would dearly love to own one, but my accountant's head is affecting my petrol head's heart. I have owned a range of Fiats over the years, from a 126 (wife's runaround) through a 2000TC Mirafiori and to a Seicento Sporting, with little bother, am I being too pessimistic?

About me - I sold Triumph, Rover and Volvo (new) back in the 70's, moving on to a job as a Customs Officer and VAT man till early retirement in 2006. I qualified as an accountant that year, have done a bit of freelancing and am about to start work as internal auditor for a local group of chain stores. My interests are many and varied - motor sport, antiques, photography, art, natural history, sport, cycling the list goes on. I am also in the process of building a Lotus Seven replica, but a little stalled at the moment - I have run out of time and more crucially ability, hopefully once the cash starts to flow again I'll buy some ability in.
