Nitrous Oxide gave me my first ever half-crown as a youngster, which was reward enough for having teeth removed at the dentists.

:N 2 O, (Laughing Gas) was the common form of anaesthetic administered in those days, where a rubber mask was put over your face, and you gradually left this world in a myriad of expanding circles, with the feeling of drowning, and suffocating. I expect it was a step up from chloroform??
Small quantities were more of a joke I guess, as these did produce the effect of uncontrolled humour, hence the title. No easy as pie local anaesthetics then, or intravenous injections to put you under!

: I remember waking up after the effects, being violently sick, spitting blood, over this green rubber apron, which in itself had a not too pleasant odour, into a bowl. More of the same when I had my Tonsills removed round about the same time

: Still as my Gramps' told me, better than going down the local market to have teeth pulled, fully conscious, with those pliers, as he had to?

:
Fillings were also administered with no local injection, and the belt driven drill bit still lives in etched in my memory, with it's slow, grinding, rasping effect, reverberating though your skull, accompanied with lots of personal ARGGH'SS! to take ones mind off the procedure.

: Never had a belt snap, that I recall.
So if you young 'fastards' are using a similar gas to make your motors blow up,(I didn't know it was a legal material? Chemists please??) just remember us pioneers in it's useage, and the pain and suffering we endured?

Hence my comparaive joy at having modern day dental treatment, it's a social event for this old 'Codger' so get some in!!
