Bit difficult to diagnose from that...Were there any rattling or knocking sounds? Does the car still start?

It "could" be a valve - but its pretty unusual....its actually more likely to be a cracked piston giving those symptoms....

I guess the first step is a compression test - which should pinpoint the cause. I hope its something simple but I wouldn't be holding my breat, sorry......
