Re: Nitros

You'd be better off sticking a turbo or supercharger on there, so it's there and you can use it all the time. Nitrox will only work while you're holding your finger on the trigger or until the gas cylinder runs out (which will be very quickly indeed).

Nitrox is a bit cheaper than a whole heap of X-charger ironmongery though.. you only need something to give you a higher fuel delivery while you're on the gas.

Nitrox works by releasing more oxygen when it gets heated up (i.e. in the cylinders) so the engine will run weak and melt if you get the fuelling wrong. This is the most likely cause of death with Nitrox.

You can theoretically dump as much gas and fuel in there as will fit.. but the beast has to be able to tek it. Your con-rods, pistons, bearings and crank were designed to cope with 220bhp or thereabouts. If you start gassing the motor to make 500bhp then those bits are going to try to escape.

Get the engine set up to produce a maximum of +30%. That should give you just under 300bhp with the taps open.. should be useful for the odd drag race. Any more than that will wreck your engine.

Fit new belts and tensioner... the old ones will get a shock .. and service the beast at half the normal intervals, especially oil and cam-belt tensioner. Fit plugs that are one grade cooler.

I'm not convinced about Nitrox though.. you have to prime it and you can only use the boost just while you're pushing a button. It's also pointless to use it on transient throttle opening (if you want to go quicker, just use more throttle).

So, it has (to me) a very limited usefulness. And unless the people you get the kit from know what they're doing, you WILL lunch your engine...

If you want more shove, more of the time, use a X-charger..
