A good GTA will set you back proper money, especially the SW GTA which is incredibly rare.
A looked after, well maintained, upgraded (brakes, Q2 etc) car with belts changed, metal impellared water pump, decent tyres (says so much about the previous owner) is the one to go for, you'll know it's been loved.
I honestly get so Feked off when people keep saying 6-8k on ebay
The cars are worth more than that and if you want a good one be prepared to pay it.
If you want a 'rough' car that needs work doing then by all means pay little up front and then more in the long run.
Quite right. Glass's guide is just rubbish when it comes to GTAs. I paid 8,700 for my GTA a year ago (53 K miles, 52 reg), which was a good prcie at the time. It had a full main dealer service history but it needed 1500 quid of spending on it to get it really sorted (and that's before Q2s at al). So enthusiast owned ones will have a bit of a premium on them, as will SWs. There's also a big element of supply and demand - prices can temporarily look low if there are several for sale at one time and some sellers are going for a quick sale.
Cheers,
