That should have been the case, if the MAF was the only problem. But there definitely is something wrong there, besides the MAF.
Is all air intake pipework intact? Check from the throttlebody backwards, til you get after the MAF. Sometimes the corrugated section of the pipe can split and cause running issues. TBH I would be suprised it this was the case, but its easy enough to check and solve with some masking tape.
