Good luck with your project. A big problem with gear selection on rear gearbox cars was the linkages at both ends. When worn you end up with a sloppy gear leaver and gear selection being difficult. You may find replacement of these make a huge difference without stripping gearbox.

Thanks for that tip Filbyman. They sound like Alfie's symptoms all right. Not being an experienced Alfisti, I was surprised at the play in the selector but took it for granted. It feels like swirling a drinking straw in a swimming pool. Particularly as my other ride is an NB MX-5 (Miata) which has a gearbox as tight as....well you know.
