Think you misunderstood, having the MAF so close to the filter wouldn't destroy it but its a bit more likely that the MAF will not read as spot on. But if its idling better that it was before then this can't be the case.

I think the theory behind keeping the MAF a good distance away from the filter is so that the airflow will even out, as the MAF can only detect what is flowing past the little wire in the sensor unit itself (by measuring the voltage needed to keep the wire at a constant temperature), the ECU then makes an assumption on how much air has flowed past by assuming whats flowed over the wire on the MAF is an average for the whole cross-section of the intake pipe. If turbulent air was flowing across the wire on the MAF, then the ECU might think the engine is getting more or less air than it is..

But in your case, it looks like this hasn't happened and everything is working as it should
