The error will stay in the car's memory until a garage clears it. If the error is intermittent and heals itself the light will go out and the car will go back to normal.

You can still take it to a garage and get the error code read out of the memory. That should give you some pointers to the cause of the problem and hopefully help you stop it happening again.
