Hi All

First post on here for a long time, and it's one to say I'm on the lookout for a GTV 3.0 V6. I had a 159 2.4JTDm a couple of years ago and (stupidly) sold it. The Alfa bug has bitten, so is anyone on here selling one anytime soon? It's going to be my daily driver so I'm not looking for a concours show winner, but a tidy car with good extensive history will be just the ticket. Looking to spend no more than around £3k.

All help, advice and direction gratefully received!

Cheers

Personally I'd guide you towards a later phase 2 model with the 6 speed box and aero kit. They look better and six speed box is a must for me !

Your budget should get you an ok one, check out the buyers guide on here for helpful tips but try to find one that's not long had belts and water pump changed.

Thank you for the link. I think that car has a 5 speed box, but am no expert (smaller wheels?). Much prefer the teledial wheels to those fitted on that car.

Agreed with the later phase 2 model, by far my favourite of the range. 100k miles doesn't scare me as long as it has been well kept with plenty of history.

I am hopefully off to see one this weekend if it hasnt sold beforehand and have had a message from a forum member too. But please keep the offers/links coming. I am in no rush so will keep looking until I find the right one.

Thanks all

Mine is for sale, BUT.. I have promised first refusal to a forum member, and will wait until he has had opportunity to see it. (maybe this weekend).Extensive history of care, all cam belt, idlers, tensioners done + a mountain of other stuff. It is Ph2 with 6 speed gearbox and is original in every way. It hasn't been messed with for thrashing/track days. Will have a new MOT end of this week, and has had new CV boots, steering rack gaitor, brake compensator. Around £3k. It will be on car & classic if the forum member doesn't want it. I just don't use it anymore. I've only done around 3000 miles in it in 3 years!
3K is quite cheap for a V6 now, so your search may be not that easy.

Sigh....

I'm going to have to let mine go and the Twinspark. I guess there is a reason guys with young families don't have a collection of Alfa's.... not very happy, in fact f*cking gutted would be closer

GTV V6 Lusso
Sargassi Green / Biscuit Leather (lovely combo)
17" Teledials
58K
Maintained by Duncan at Alfanet for the last 18 months
Had new clutch, flywheel, belts, custom exhaust flexi's, and loads of other bits done in the last 18 months
Very nice and still really stock
Goodyear F1's....with 2 new ones on in the last 2 months
Tidy with very nice and well executed detailing that would be a ideal candiate for getting to show quality.
Subtle private plate

If your interested drop me a PM, I'll also be putting my Twinny up for sale this weekend.

I don't really want to do the ebay thing....and if I don't get what's the 'going rate' I'll keep hold of them.

Really needs to go to another Alfa nut.

Hi, I've just sold my Vela Blue/blue V6 that was advertised on PH & the OP was 2nd in the list of about 10 enquirers on the car....unfortunately another serial Alfa owner has bought the car and will be using it as his daily driver.

I've had 2 enjoyable years of ownership & can honestly say I was amazed at the level of interest shown in the car during the time I owned it. The whole Alfa experience has been a great one & I'll look back on it with a big smile, especially defying certain friends who said if wouldn't get to Le Mans and back in 2014 without 3rd party assistance! The noise of the V6 with a free flowing exhaust from a certain manufacturer in Walsall just added to the enjoyment.

Without being indiscreet & lowering the tone of the reply, I didn't feel the need to negotiate on the quoting price as I was in a strong position given the people queuing up to try and buy the car - I didn't envisage this & hope it will help those who are looking to buy a V6 to understand where the market is price wise (& I was pleased to be able to decline one or two "I'll buy it for £x" without seeing it). I also think that some car dealers are conveniently under valuing their V6s & it's now upto the ardent followers to take advantage of those opportunities & snap them up where possible.

Minimandan - good luck with your search.

One final thing... Forum gave me the confidence to buy a GTV V6 in the first place & the enthusiasm/support from the members added to the whole experience -a big thanks to you all.

Chris, you don't understand how gutted I am to have missed out on your car. It looked lovely in the photos, exactly what I was after. But hey, wasn't meant to be so my search continues! Let's hope tomorrow's car is a good'un as Im doing a 400 mile round trip to see it. What else would you do on a Sunday anyway...

I am however surprised at the 50/50 split between the people who tell me I'm going to end up with a shed for my £3k budget, and the others who say that's about right. Pricing of GTVs at the moment is all over the place, having been offered cars ranging from 58k miles to around 100k miles all around the same price range. Even the top end ones on eBay need a cambelt doing, so I see no point in spending an extra £1500 on a car that needs £700 spending straight away.

I've just bought a V6 GTV and I scoured the market. For a good phase 2 I would budget £4.5k go 5k. I saw a few high mileage ones for less but they will need more immediate maintenance often which can be counter productive.

Anyways just my thoughts! Good luck with thr search!

Most GTVs will require 2/3/4k invested to get it back to standard (unless v lucky).

Buy cheap: Have the extra work done (or do it yourself). Ultimately v satisfying.

Buy expensive: Trust that all the work has been done by someone else. Can be risky.

Mileage: Has zero to do with current condition. Some of the best cars I know have high miles & vice versa.

Service history: Good, particularly for engine history.

The true condition of any GTV will be unknown until sill covers, wheel arch liners & carpet is removed.

As above, I think service history and a file full of receipts is a great place to start from... 100k miles and above is not a problem for these engines as long as they have been looked after. What would worry me more is low miles and little history... or signs that an amateur has been tinkering with it. Just my own POV.
Go for as tidy body work as you can, accepting there will be age related defects with a 15 year old car.
I reckon 3.5-4k should buy a reasonably sorted one privately.
There will always be costs associated with cars of this age and the risk goes with the territory.
Good luck with the search.

Good luck on the hunt , took a while for me to find mine (twinnie) and that was eight years ago . Think I covered around 1k of miles when I decided to look for a spider last year until I found the right one from a fellow forum member.

I would defo buy private as its nice to talk to the owner a get a vibe how well the car has been treated/mistreated.

I have a (early) Phase 2 GTV V6. 5 speed. Reg: 1998 (S Plate). No Aero kit. In Silver with Red interior. 126000 miles.

I'm in no rush to sell, but if the right alfa-enthusiastic person and the right price came along then why not. (first child is due in April). I'm in Swindon, so not far away.

I purchased it from a gent in Bristol.

It's been well looked after. I recently changed the oil cooler to the AutoLusso replacement one. I did a coolant change too. The Cambelt is was done at 119k. By Alex/Smackey.

It's been serviced by a local Alfa specialist since.

If you consider that the rest of it is good, I can tell you the bad bits:

There's some body work on the offside rear quarter that needs attention.
The recirc motor needs replacing (annoying click from behind glovebox). I have a spare one. I haven't yet attempted it.
The rear Alfa boot badge is worn.
The drivers door handle/lock works, but feels slightly loose.

Also good:
New battery
New clutch in the last 2 years.
Kumho tyres all round.
Large folder full of receipts.
Driven like it should be driven.
All electrics are fine.
Alarm works.
Rear demister works.
Secret Boot release in glove box works.
Airbag light is working as it should work. (cable included to reset)
MOT is due 3rd November 2016.
Feel free to message.

Cheers guys, this is like waiting for a bus. Nothing for a week then they all come at once!
Bluetonic, I have one to see very local that's just come up and Alfa_Wurzels cars too. I am ideally after one with the 17" wheels and aero kit (I know Alfa_Wurzel's car hasn't got the aero kit). I will definitely keep it in mind though and may be in contact over the weekend

Alfa_Wurzel - no problem!
