In the end it turned out to be the left rear wheel bearing. Started replacing brake pads and found a ruptured rubber dustcover over the universal joint behind the front left wheel. All the grease was swept out messing up the mudguard and suspension parts. I hoped this would be the cause of the rumbling noise which was not the case. Further dealer investigation ended up in replacement of the left rear wheel bearing. Now it's just the roar of the V6 that makes the joy of driving.

What a mess though with your gaitor and the grease everywhere.
You have had a double bill .the joint and the bearing.
I bought a joint but as problem solved for now I'll keep it as a spare.
