Re: 1983 Alfetta - Potential Problems

These cars are fairly robust.
Apart from Rust and assuming all electrical componts are working as 'specified' includng any electric windows etc.
1) Blown head gasket.
2) Rubber universal joints in tail shaft ( 3 from memory) .Tailshaft runs at engine speed as clutch at rear.
3) Gearbox syncro---second gear has espeically week synchromesh
4) Run finger around inside of exhaust..an oily residue means engine is using oil.
5) Look at the tyres for anysigns of uneaven wear..if any, then idicative of poor alignment or something wrong with chassis.
6)Check under car for any leaks..water, oil, transmission oil brake etc
6)Inspect for any body damage repair.

The rear brakes caliper can freeze on these cars and the rear clutch slave cylinder will likely fail every 3 years irespective of whether you bleed the cluch fluid every year or not...or atleast the one on my 1983 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTVdid ..... I owned this car for 19 years.

Alfa Owner who sometimes drives a 'Bloody' Volvo .....
