As I have already posted, i am very disappointed with the mpg from the 2.4JTDM. Even dring at a constant 60mph with a light right foot can I get nearer the 40 mpg claimed for the combined. The extra urban of 51 is just not possible. Official figures are over rated by at least 30%, and now having read some of the other comments it appears the diesels are some of the best!! the figures quoted as "government figures" were supplied to the VCA by Alfa Romeo and were clearly wrong.
My car as delivered with delivery miles had squealing brakes, a noise under the dash, a sun blind that didn't work, seat belts that didn't retract and a passenger seat that only locked in the fully back position.
First dealer fixed the sun blind, said nothing wrong with brakes and nothing wrong with noise under dash. Oh and in their fixing of the sun blind they returned the car with a large crack in the panoramic roof. So the car was returned for a new glass roof.
Second dealer said straight away that the noise under the dash was not normal and fixed that, and modified the trim by the seat belts which now retract satisfactorily ( 2 more visits).
During the visit to get the seat belts fixed, I mentioned the seat had started rocking so that is being addressed today.
However yesterday the engine attention light came on, and this is apparently due to a stuck valve in the inlet manifold. I will need to take the car in again once a spare has been delivered for that.
Brakes don't squeal much now, passenger seat still doesn't work correctly, but no one gets in the back so doesn't really matter.
Speaker covers now rattle so loudly that any music sounds dredful. In reality the stereo in my Wife's, three year old 1.4L focus sounds far better than the one in the Brera.
Dealer No 1 doesn't even return my emails now. They have tested the car twice for mpg, but will not confirm on paper (despite telling me verbally) that the car's management system is working correcty.
I wrote a recorded deliverey letter to Alfa UK customer service. No answer. I have emailed them over 20 times. Actually had someone call me two weeks ago full of apologies, he would take the issue staright to his manager but I have heard nothing since. When they did answer some emails, I got 4 replies exactly the same as they had obviously just bulk replied to their in box. I don't think UK Alfa Romeo customer service does actually exists.
I think the main showroom in Dealer No 2 just about sums Alfa up. A brand new showroom, looks great, on 2 nd floor stylish fixtures and fittings etc etc. Then for the functionality, a couple of computers with masses of cables shoved in full view on the floor under the glass desks, cables trailing across the floor across walkways, several multiway power adapters link to one power point in the wall. An old dot matrix printer mounted on a box. The PDQ machine ledged on a window sill with cable across the windows and floor. Same as the car, styling came first, functionality second.
As I deposited my car with Dealer No 2 this morning, the service manager informed me (and I guess I should be grateful), that he had put £3.00 of fuel in the courtesy car (the fuel needle was still on empty), so already late for work the first thing I had to do was look for a petrol station to even get me to the office. They are selling £30K cars but have no idea on what a £30K car customer deserves or expects. Such a shame as the Brera could be so good, I shall be getting rid of mine before the 2nd hand price dips through the floor as it has done with previous Alfas.

I love the car and it is a love affair I am happy to continue, so long as it doesn' keep breaking down.
Can anyone actually confirm how good/bad the 3.2 mpg is?
32 mpg is there or there abouts. I get 34 mpg with a gentle right foot which I found shocking after 46-50mpg on my last 156 2.4 JTD. The 159 is much (too) heavy and 50bhp more powerful leading to simliar performance to the 156 but with a 32% deterioration in economy!! I know it's 5 star Euro NCAP, but at one hell of a price. BTW - my airflow valve in the manifold failed too - just replaced 10 hour job - no improvement in economy though...
