I did some back to back Dyno testing of various induction modifications from new airboxes, different filters and induction lengths and yes it can all make a difference, not really good for large gains though, don't expect much and you won't be too disappointed.

I'v e used oil filters and not had a problem with a MAF but can understand how it can happen, Nigels advice seems sound enough.
